Langhe DOC Appellation

Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)

Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani
Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)

Langhe is a territorial denomination and derives its justification from the wise traditional practice that leads the winemakers of Langa and Roero to select the production in the vineyard according to the quality of the grapes.
The large number of cultivated vines is justified by the complex pedo-climatic landscape of the Langhe, where we have marly, calcareous, sandy and clayey soils, sometimes mixed together in a unique way.
The Langhe DOC wine obtained the recognition of the Controlled Designation of Origin on November 22, 1994.

Vinification and Aging

During the vinification phases, only loyal and constant oenological practices of the area are allowed, suitable to give the wines their particular quality characteristics.
The winemaking practices of the Langhe DOC wine include, among other things, that:
– The maximum yield of grapes into DOC Langhe wine must not exceed 70% and 30% for the various types of Passito Wine; if these parameters are exceeded within the limit of 5%, the excess will not be entitled to the DOC. Beyond these limits the right to DOC for the whole product lapses.
– The grapes destined for the production of DOC Langhe Arneis Passito, Rosso Passito and Bianco Passito wine must be subjected to natural drying on the plant or on racks, followed by vinification which ends with aging for a period of 10 months.
– In the designation of the Langhe DOC wines, the term “Vigna” may be mentioned as long as it is followed by the relative toponym and certain winemaking practices are respected.
– On the labels of each type of DOC Langhe wine it is mandatory to report the year of production of the grapes, with the exclusion of the type of Sparkling Wine.
