Greco Bianco Grape
White Grape
The white grape Greco Bianco is grown in the regions of Basilicata, Calabria, Lazio, Puglia, Umbria.
Greco Bianco is a vine that has an assonance with Greece, so it is possible that it originates from the Hellenic peninsula. It is grown in various regions of central-southern Italy, but its greatest development is in the Calabrian territory, in the areas surrounding the provinces of Catanzaro and Reggio Calabria. Its grapes are used to produce wines both in purity ( Greco di Bianco DOC ) and in blends with other vines.
It plays an important role in Cirò DOC Bianco (at least for 90%), in Greco del Lamezia DOC (85%) and in an unusual passito wine, Greco di Bianco DOC, whose production area is restricted to the municipality of Bianco and to a part of the municipality of Casignana in the province of Reggio Calabria. Grapes of Greco Bianco are left to dry before pressing and the resulting wine has a minimum alcohol content of 14 ° and 17 ° total and has a remarkable predisposition to aging.
Characteristics of the wine
The Greco Bianco grape gives a wine that in its dry version has a light gold color with amber reflections with notes of toasted almonds and figs. In its sweet version the wine is more decidedly golden and intense on the nose, with notes of orange blossom, figs and honey.
