Nerello Mascalese Grape
Black Grape
The black grape Nerello Mascalese is grown in the regions of Calabria and Sicily.
Nerello Mascalese is a vine whose origins are not entirely certain, it seems that it was selected several hundreds of years ago by the farmers of the Mascali plain, a narrow agricultural belt between the sea and Etna, in the province of Catania. In the Etna area one can easily find old sapling vines of Nerello Mascalese, clinging to the mountain on the black lava stone terraces. On Etna the practice of breeding the plant by offshoot was widespread.
From the Nerello Mascalese grape a wine of a deep red color is obtained, with intense aromas of violets, small red fruits and spices, with a full, warm and dry taste.
