Gaglioppo Grape
Black Grape
The black grape variety Gaglioppo is grown in the regions of Abruzzo, Calabria, Marche, Sardinia, Sicily, Umbria.
Gaglioppo is a grape variety widespread especially in Calabria, which was probably imported by the Greeks at the time of Magna Graecia thanks to sporting events and events whose awards consisted in the assignment of grapes to the winners. The most suitable area extends into the provinces of Cosenza and Catanzaro, in the hills between the coast and the Sila mountain range, whose strong temperature variations between day and night favor a slow ripening of the grapes, thus allowing them to develop optimally the organoleptic properties of the vine, especially a high sugar concentration.
Characteristics of the wine
Wines produced with Gaglioppo grapes are decidedly robust and moderately elegant; the rosés have a pink-orange color with aromas that denote a certain elegance and complexity, with a clear predominance of red fruits which confirm these characteristics also on the palate, together with other hints of strawberries and mineral components. In the reds, on the other hand, a ruby color tending to garnet prevails, with a sweet, spicy olfactory complexity, with notes of tar and floral finishes of roses that also elongate the taste, where there is a good tannic structure, a full body and a robust alcohol content .
